Orlando Pirates’ #BetwayPrem title hopes in tatters after Richards Bay FC draw

Orlando Pirates’ hopes of clinching the 2025/26 Betway Premiership title suffered a major setback after they were held to a 2-2 draw by Richards Bay FC at the uMhlathuze Sports Complex on Friday.

The Buccaneers needed all three points to keep pressure on leaders Mamelodi Sundowns, but instead left frustrated as their fate slipped further out of their control.

Richards Bay stunned the visitors early when Thulani Gumede opened the scoring, punishing Pirates’ defensive lapses to give the hosts a dream start. The Buccaneers struggled to find rhythm in the first half, but came out stronger after the break. In the 50th minute, Oswin Appollis struck to level matters at 1-1, sparking hope among the Soweto faithful.

That hope was short-lived. Just nine minutes later, in the 59th minute, Lindokuhle Zikhali restored Richards Bay’s advantage with a clinical finish, leaving Pirates rattled and staring at defeat. The Buccaneers threw everything forward in desperation, and their persistence finally paid off deep into stoppage time. In the 92nd minute, Lebone Seema delivered a dramatic equalizer to make it 2-2, rescuing a point but not the dream.

Despite the fightback, the draw leaves Pirates on 55 points, one behind Sundowns on 56. Crucially, Sundowns have played one game fewer, meaning the reigning champions remain firmly in control of the title race. For Pirates players and fans, the draw felt like a defeat — a bitter night at uMhlathuze Sports Complex that may well define their season.
