Mduduzi Shabalala: My favourite type of player is one who plays with confidence, creativity, and freedom. I enjoy watching players who can express themselves, excite fans, and make a difference in games while still working hard for the team.

 What skills are needed to excel in your position?

You need great technical ability, vision, creativity, quick decision-making, and confidence on the ball. You also need a strong work ethic and the ability to influence the game in both attack and defence.

I want people to remember me as a player who played with confidence, creativity, and passion. More importantly, I want them to remember my journey – the hard work, resilience, and dedication it took to overcome challenges and keep chasing my dreams.

Which parts of your game strengthened over the past season, and what will you work on going into the new one?

I think my decision-making and understanding of the game matured the most. Going into the new season, I want to improve my consistency, contribute more goals and assists, and continue developing all aspects of my game to help the team succeed.

Which football boot will you be playing in during the new season?

The new PUMA Ultra 7 Nitro is an exciting boot. It’s lightweight, comfortable, and built for speed, which suits my style of play perfectly and helps me perform with confidence on the pitch.

Yes, seeing Mfundo Vilakazi being part of the PUMA family gave me a positive perspective on the brand. We’ve spoken about his experience, but ultimately my decision was based on how well PUMA’s values, vision, and commitment to athletes align with my own goals and journey as a footballer.

Are you someone who enjoys fashion?

I would describe my style as simple, clean, and comfortable. I enjoy fashion and looking good, but I like keeping it authentic and staying true to who I am outside of football.

In May 2026 you suffered a serious injury. What went going through your mind?

It was a very difficult moment for me. I was disappointed because I had worked hard and had big goals for both my club and the national team. But I also knew that setbacks are part of football, so I focused on my recovery and stayed motivated, knowing my time will come again.

How is the recovery going?

It is going well, and I’m getting stronger every day. Mentally, this period has taught me patience, resilience, and the importance of staying positive during difficult times. It’s helped me grow not only as a player but also as a person, and I believe I’ll come back even stronger.

What would you say to young footballers who experience setbacks or lack self-belief?

I would tell them to keep believing in themselves and trust the process. Setbacks are part of the journey, but hard work, consistency, and a positive mindset will always create opportunities. Focus on improving every day, and the right people will notice your talent.

What are the biggest moments so far in your career?

Making my debut for Kaizer Chiefs, representing Bafana Bafana for the first time and winning my first ever trophy – the Nedbank Cup.

What was the feeling when you made your Bafana debut in October 2025?

It was a proud and emotional moment – the result of years of hard work and sacrifice. Representing my country on the international stage was a dream come true.

How do you balance enjoying the moment with staying focused on bigger goals?

I always take time to appreciate how far I’ve come, but I never lose sight of where I want to go. Staying focused on my goals, working hard every day, and constantly looking for ways to improve helps me stay motivated and hungry for more.

You are active on social media and have over 200k followers on IG, what type of content do you share?

I like to share moments from my football journey, training, match days, and parts of my life off the pitch. It’s a way for me to connect with supporters, inspire young players, and give people a glimpse into who I am beyond football.
