Eric Tinkler Leaves Asante Kotoko After Just Four Matches in Charge

Asante Kotoko have confirmed the immediate departure of head coach Eric Tinkler after the South African tactician requested to be released from his contract for personal reasons, bringing an abrupt end to his short spell with the Ghanaian giants.

Tinkler was only appointed on July 17, 2026, with high expectations surrounding his arrival at one of Africa’s most decorated clubs. However, his tenure has come to an unexpected conclusion less than three months after taking charge.

In an official statement released on Monday, Asante Kotoko announced: “The Board of Directors of Asante Kotoko Sporting Club has agreed to the request of its Head Coach, Mr. Eric Tinkler, to be released from his contract with the Club effective immediately for personal reasons.”

The club revealed that discussions were held in an effort to persuade the former PSL coach to remain in his position, but ultimately his decision was respected. Asante Kotoko indicated that both parties had engaged in negotiations before reaching the final agreement.

According to the statement, “both parties engaged in meaningful negotiations to avert the decision at this time of the relationship between the parties but finally had to respect Coach Tinkler’s decision.” The announcement confirmed that the separation was amicable despite the unexpected timing.

Tinkler leaves after overseeing just four competitive matches for the Porcupine Warriors. During that period, he recorded one victory, two draws and one defeat as he attempted to establish his philosophy and guide the club’s ambitions for the season.

Despite the brief nature of his stay, the club expressed gratitude for his contribution. Asante Kotoko stated that they remain appreciative of the professionalism and commitment shown by the coach throughout his time at the club.

The Ghanaian giants specifically praised the former Orlando Pirates, Cape Town City and SuperSport United mentor, saying they were grateful for “his professionalism and commitment to the success of the club during his rather short stint with the Porcupine Warriors and wishes him well in his next endeavours.”

While Tinkler’s departure creates uncertainty on the technical bench, the club was quick to reassure supporters that its objectives remain unchanged. The statement emphasized that “professionalism, unwavering commitment and total focus are crucial to achieve the key performance indices it has set to meet its present objectives.”

Asante Kotoko also confirmed that the club will continue operating under its existing football structure, with the technical team moving forward under the leadership of Director of Football Stanley Purl Menzo. The focus will now shift to maintaining momentum on the pitch as the search for stability begins following Tinkler’s sudden exit.
