Orlando Pirates Receive Massive MTN8 Final Boost as Key Duo Return to Training

Orlando Pirates have received a significant boost ahead of their highly anticipated MTN8 final showdown against Mamelodi Sundowns after the club confirmed the return of key players Evidence Makgopa and Thalente Mbatha to full-team training.

The Buccaneers are preparing for one of the biggest matches of their season, with the MTN8 final scheduled for 10 October 2026. The Premier Soccer League is expected to announce the host venue tonight at 20h00, adding further excitement to the build-up of the blockbuster encounter.

In an update released by the club, Pirates confirmed that both Bafana Bafana internationals are on the road to full recovery. The club stated: “After missing the opening stages of the 2026/27 season, Bafana Bafana internationals Evidence Makgopa and Thalente Mbatha have returned to full-team training following their recovery from their respective injuries.”

Mbatha has endured a frustrating spell on the sidelines after suffering a knee injury. According to Orlando Pirates, “Mbatha has been sidelined with a knee injury since 10 August 2026,” forcing him to miss several important matches at both club and international level.

Makgopa has also been unavailable for much of the campaign after battling a lengthy injury setback. Pirates revealed that the striker “has been receiving treatment for patellar tendinitis since 5 August 2026,” with medical staff carefully managing his rehabilitation process.

The return of the pair will be welcomed by the technical team as Pirates aim to defend their MTN8 crown against a formidable Sundowns side. Both players have become important figures for club and country in recent seasons, making their recovery a timely development.

Pirates further disclosed that the duo have already taken another step towards a competitive return, saying: “Both players have also featured in friendly matches as they continue working towards regaining full match fitness.” Their participation in match situations suggests they are closing in on a return to official action.

The injuries also affected their international prospects, as Makgopa and Mbatha were not included in the latest Bafana Bafana squad selected by newly appointed head coach Pitso Mosimane for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers. Their absence opened the door for other players while they focused on their recovery programmes.

With the MTN8 final fast approaching, Pirates supporters will be encouraged by the prospect of having two influential players available once again. Whether they are ready to start or feature from the bench against Sundowns remains to be seen, but their return has undoubtedly strengthened the Buccaneers ahead of one of the most important fixtures of the season.
