Kaizer Chiefs Held by Stellies as Amakhosi Lose Ground in Premiership Race

Kaizer Chiefs suffered a frustrating setback in their Betway Premiership campaign after being held to a 1-1 draw by Stellenbosch FC at FNB Stadium in Johannesburg on Tuesday evening. The dropped points leave Amakhosi with more ground to make up in the race for the top positions, as they now sit five points behind third-placed AmaZulu FC.

The match began at a competitive pace, with both sides looking to establish control in midfield. Chiefs enjoyed spells of possession but found it difficult to break through a disciplined Stellenbosch defensive setup during the opening exchanges.

Amakhosi’s frustrations were evident as Brendon Moloisane received a yellow card in the 23rd minute following a tough challenge. Sibongiseni Mthethwa also went into the referee’s book shortly before halftime as the hosts struggled to find a breakthrough before the interval.

The first half ended goalless, but the contest burst into life immediately after the restart. Stellenbosch stunned the home crowd in the 48th minute when Sinoxolo Kwayiba found the back of the net, giving the visitors a valuable lead early in the second half.

Kwayiba’s goal shifted the pressure firmly onto Chiefs, who responded positively and pushed numbers forward in search of an equaliser. Their attacking intent finally paid off ten minutes later when Mduduzi Shabalala produced a clinical finish to level matters at 1-1 in the 58th minute.

The equaliser injected renewed energy into the hosts, who continued to press for a winning goal. Stellenbosch, however, remained organised and difficult to break down, limiting clear-cut opportunities while looking threatening on the counterattack.

Both coaches turned to their benches as the match entered its final half-hour. Stellenbosch introduced fresh legs including Bradley Grobler, while Chiefs coach Nasreddine Nabi responded by bringing on Ethan Chislett and Flavio Silva to add more attacking firepower.

As the game became increasingly physical, Stellenbosch collected yellow cards through Luthando Vena, Njabulo Blom, Terrence Mashego and Thabiso Lebitso. Despite the cautions, the visitors maintained their defensive discipline and continued to frustrate the Soweto giants.

Chiefs made further attacking changes late in the match, introducing Asenele Velebayi, Thulani Mabaso and Kabelo Nkgwesa in an attempt to find a late winner. However, Stellenbosch stood firm and denied the hosts the decisive goal they desperately needed.

The closing stages produced plenty of tension, with Inacio Miguel receiving a yellow card deep into stoppage time, but neither side could find a breakthrough. The final whistle confirmed a 1-1 draw, with Sinoxolo Kwayiba and Mduduzi Shabalala on target for their respective teams.

While Stellenbosch will be pleased with a hard-earned point away from home, the result represents another blow for Kaizer Chiefs, who now find themselves nine points behind leaders Mamelodi Sundowns and eight behind defending champions Orlando Pirates, leaving little margin for error as the Premiership campaign gathers momentum.
