Mamelodi Sundowns Stay Top as Richards Bay FC Swept Aside in Four-Goal Show
Mamelodi Sundowns continued their march at the summit of the Betway Premiership with a commanding 4-1 victory over Richards Bay FC at Princess Magogo Stadium in KwaMashu on Tuesday evening. The result ensured that Masandawana remained one point clear at the top of the standings despite pressure from their closest challengers, who still have a game in hand.
The visitors wasted little time asserting themselves and took the lead in the 18th minute through Tashreeq Matthews. The winger finished off a slick attacking move to hand Sundowns an early advantage and underline the visitors’ attacking intentions.
Richards Bay responded positively and refused to be overawed by the league leaders. Their determination was rewarded in the 22nd minute when Lwandile Sandile Mabuya found the back of the net, bringing the hosts level and briefly raising hopes of an upset in KwaMashu.
However, Sundowns quickly regained control of the contest. Their dominance in possession and movement in the final third eventually paid off in the 37th minute when Iqraam Rayners restored the visitors’ lead with a well-taken finish.
The Brazilians carried their 2-1 advantage into halftime and emerged from the break with even greater purpose. Just three minutes into the second half, Rayners struck again to complete his brace and put Sundowns firmly in command of the encounter.
With a two-goal cushion, Miguel Cardoso’s side began to dictate proceedings with confidence. Richards Bay struggled to contain the relentless attacking waves from the visitors, who continued to create opportunities across the pitch.
Sundowns effectively ended the contest in the 59th minute when Fawaaz Basadien added a fourth goal. The defender capped off an excellent team move and ensured there would be no route back for the home side.
Cardoso then turned to his bench to manage the workload of several key players. Themba Zwane, Thabo Cele, Antonio Van Wyk and Nuno Santos were all introduced as Sundowns comfortably navigated the closing stages while maintaining control of possession.
Richards Bay also made several substitutions in search of fresh energy, bringing on Lundi Mahala, Wandile Ngidi, Wandile Ngema, Olwethu Mbambo and Sbani Khumalo. Despite the changes, the hosts were unable to trouble the Sundowns defence consistently as the visitors saw out the match professionally.
The final whistle confirmed a convincing 4-1 victory for Mamelodi Sundowns, with goals from Tashreeq Matthews, a brace from Iqraam Rayners and a strike from Fawaaz Basadien securing all three points.
The result keeps Masandawana at the top of the Betway Premiership table on 21 points, one point ahead of second-placed Orlando Pirates despite the Buccaneers having a game in hand. Sundowns have also opened up a four-point gap over third-placed AmaZulu FC and now sit nine points clear of Kaizer Chiefs, further strengthening their position as the team to beat in this season’s title race.
