Tshepang Moremi Fires Orlando Pirates to Vital CAF Champions League Win
Orlando Pirates claimed a valuable 1-0 away victory over African Stars FC in their CAF Champions League encounter in Botswana on Saturday afternoon, with Tshepang Moremi’s second-half winner proving the difference in a fiercely contested match. The Buccaneers dominated large spells of the game but had to remain patient against a disciplined and resilient African Stars side determined to protect their home turf.
Pirates started brightly and earned the first corner of the match in the fourth minute after Gamphani Lungu surged down the flank and delivered a dangerous cross. The visitors continued to push forward and nearly found the breakthrough in the 15th minute when Simphiwe Masilela’s corner picked out Lungu, whose diving header flashed narrowly wide after shaving past the net.
The Buccaneers maintained relentless pressure on the African Stars defence. Moremi produced a defence-splitting pass in the 19th minute that released Yanela Mbuthuma, but goalkeeper Mervin Kasetura was equal to the effort. Six minutes later, Bulelani Sigomoshe found Mbuthuma with an excellent through ball, only for the striker to send his attempt just wide of the target.
As the first half progressed, Pirates continued to threaten. Masilela was left frustrated when he burst into the penalty area in the 30th minute and appeared to be pushed from behind while bearing down on goal, but the referee allowed play to continue. The contest was played at a high intensity despite difficult conditions and extreme heat.
African Stars managed to create occasional openings of their own. Sipho Chaine was called into action in the 34th minute to make a rare save against the run of play, while Masilela later required medical attention after receiving a heavy knock in midfield. The hosts also threatened from a corner five minutes before halftime, but Pirates defended comfortably.
Pirates almost took a lead into the break when the lively Lungu connected with a running header in the 45th minute, but his effort drifted narrowly beyond the upright. After an entertaining and action-packed opening half, the two sides went into the interval locked at 0-0.
The visitors resumed with renewed attacking intent after halftime. Moremi continued to menace the defence, while Mbuthuma twice came close to breaking the deadlock. The striker found himself one-on-one with Kasetura in the 59th minute, but the goalkeeper reacted quickly and denied him the opportunity to get a shot away.
African Stars remained dangerous on the counterattack and nearly capitalised after a Pirates corner in the 62nd minute. Chaine initially fumbled a shot before recovering possession. Moments later, the Buccaneers conceded a free kick in a threatening area, but their defensive wall stood firm to preserve parity. Pirates then introduced fresh legs, bringing on Sbangani Zulu and Evidence Makgopa for Nkosinathi Sibisi and Mbuthuma respectively.
The decisive moment arrived in the 75th minute when Tshepang Moremi finally broke the deadlock. After sustained pressure from the visitors, the winger found space in the attacking third and fired home the crucial goal to hand Orlando Pirates a deserved 1-0 lead. The strike silenced the home supporters and rewarded Pirates’ persistence throughout the afternoon.
With the advantage secured, Pirates looked to manage the closing stages and introduced further substitutions as Mpho Padime replaced goalscorer Moremi, while Mthetheleli Mthiyane came on for Simphiwe Selepe. The changes added fresh energy as the visitors sought to see out the contest and protect their narrow lead.
African Stars threw everything forward during the final minutes, forcing Pirates into desperate defending as they searched for an equaliser. The Buccaneers stood firm under sustained pressure, with their backline showing tremendous resilience. Deep into stoppage time, Kabelo Kgositsile briefly received medical attention after going down off the ball but quickly returned to continue. Pirates successfully weathered the late storm to secure a hard-earned victory and take a crucial advantage from a challenging away assignment in the CAF Champions League.
