Kaizer Chiefs Left With Mountain to Climb After Narrow Defeat in Zambia
Kaizer Chiefs suffered a narrow 1-0 defeat to Red Arrows in the first leg of their CAF Confederation Cup second preliminary round clash at Levy Mwanawasa Stadium in Ndola on Saturday afternoon. A late header from Alassane Diarra proved to be the difference in a tightly contested encounter, leaving Amakhosi with work to do in the return leg on home soil.
Before the match got underway, Chiefs confirmed that supporters in South Africa would not be able to watch the game on television. In a statement released ahead of kick-off, the club revealed that the hosts were unable to provide SABC with the necessary broadcast link to air the match in the country.
With the off-field disappointment confirmed, attention quickly turned to matters on the pitch as both sides looked to gain an early advantage in the two-legged tie. The opening exchanges were cautious, with neither team willing to commit too many numbers forward.
Chiefs were dealt an early setback in the first half when defender Thabiso Monyane was forced off through injury in the 30th minute. Thulani Mabaso was introduced as a replacement as Amakhosi reshuffled their plans for the remainder of the contest.
Despite a competitive first-half battle, clear-cut opportunities remained limited as both teams defended resolutely. Red Arrows enjoyed spells of possession, while Chiefs looked threatening on the counterattack whenever space became available.
The deadlock remained intact throughout the opening period, and after five minutes of added time the referee brought the first half to a close with the score still locked at 0-0.
Chiefs head coach continued to search for a breakthrough after the interval and made a change at the start of the second half, introducing Flavio Da Silva in place of Luke Baartman. The visitors showed greater urgency after the restart but struggled to find the final pass in the attacking third.
As the clock ticked down, Amakhosi made another double substitution in the 71st minute. Wandile Duba replaced Mfundo Vilakazi, while Etiosa Ighodaro came on for Mduduzi Shabalala as Chiefs sought fresh attacking energy in pursuit of an important away goal.
The breakthrough finally arrived in the 76th minute. Red Arrows won a corner kick and Alassane Diarra rose highest inside the penalty area to power a header beyond Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper Renaldo Leaner, giving the Zambian side a crucial 1-0 lead and sending the home supporters into celebration.
Chiefs pushed for a late equaliser and introduced Faiz Abrahams for Paseka Mako in the closing stages. Despite three minutes of stoppage time being added, Amakhosi could not find a way back into the match as Red Arrows held firm to secure a hard-fought first-leg victory. The Soweto giants will now look to overturn the deficit in South Africa and keep their CAF Confederation Cup campaign alive.
