Durban City FC Take Firm Grip on CAF Confederation Cup Playoff Clash

Durban City FC moved within touching distance of the CAF Confederation Cup group stages after securing an impressive 3-1 victory over Mauritian outfit AS Port Louis 2000 at the Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban on Sunday afternoon. The result marked a successful continental debut for the Citizens under their new identity and handed the club a valuable two-goal cushion heading into the return leg.

The hosts made a confident start to the encounter and enjoyed the majority of possession during the opening exchanges. Durban City looked determined to make home advantage count, keeping the visitors pinned inside their own half as they searched for an early breakthrough.

Kyle Jurgens created the first meaningful opportunity in the fifth minute when he picked out Bandile Shandu inside the penalty area. However, Shandu’s effort took a deflection and went behind for a corner as the Citizens continued to apply pressure.

The attacking trio of Haashim Domingo, Jurgens and Gaston Sirino caused problems throughout the first half. Domingo came close in the eighth minute after a neat combination with Jurgens, but his effort sailed over the crossbar. Three minutes later, the midfielder was denied after the goalkeeper rushed off his line to claim the ball ahead of him.

Durban City’s persistence paid off in the 15th minute when Domingo finally found the breakthrough. The midfielder finished confidently to hand the Citizens a deserved lead after an energetic opening spell that saw them dominate possession and territory.

The home side remained in control as the half progressed. Jurgens narrowly missed the target in the 39th minute following a well-worked attacking move, while Sirino showed his quality moments later by beating his marker inside the area before seeing his shot blocked behind for a corner. Durban City took a deserved 1-0 advantage into the halftime break.

The Citizens wasted no time after the restart, doubling their lead just one minute into the second half. Sirino capped off a brilliant attacking move with a composed finish to put Durban City firmly in command of the contest and delight the home supporters.

AS Port Louis 2000 responded quickly and reduced the deficit in the 53rd minute to breathe life back into the tie. The visitors enjoyed a brief spell of pressure, but goalkeeper Fredrick Asare remained alert and comfortably dealt with a dangerous effort in the 70th minute to preserve Durban City’s advantage.

The Citizens continued to threaten in attack as Domingo saw another effort deflected behind for a corner. Jean Lumumba then came agonisingly close to restoring the two-goal cushion in the 73rd minute when his shot flashed just wide of the target. In an effort to inject fresh energy into the side, Durban City made a double substitution in the 80th minute, introducing Tashreeq Morris and Fezile Gcaba in place of Sirino and Shandu.

The changes proved effective as Durban City finished the match strongly. Lumumba was denied by the goalkeeper in the 87th minute before substitute Morris put the result beyond doubt deep into stoppage time, converting a penalty in the 94th minute. The 3-1 victory gives the Citizens a healthy advantage heading into the second leg and leaves them well placed to secure a historic berth in the CAF Confederation Cup group stages.
