Mamelodi Sundowns stumble in Kigali as Al Hilal go top with 2-1 victory
Al Hilal Omdurman delivered a decisive blow to Mamelodi Sundowns’ CAF Champions League campaign, securing a 2-1 win at the Amahoro National Stadium in Kigali, Rwanda, on Friday.
The result propelled the Sudanese giants to the summit of Group C, leaving Sundowns with work to do in the remaining two fixtures.
First-Half
The match was tightly contested in the opening stages, with Sundowns enjoying possession but struggling to break down Al Hilal’s disciplined defence. Just before the interval, Al Hilal struck the first blow when Mohamed Abdelrahman converted from the penalty spot, punishing Sundowns for a defensive lapse.
Second-Half
The Sudanese side came out firing after the break, and within minutes, Jean Claude Girumugisha doubled their advantage with a well-taken effort that stunned the South African champions.
Sundowns responded through Arthur Sales, who pulled one back in the 61st minute to give his side hope. Despite a late surge and attacking substitutions, Sundowns could not find the equaliser, leaving Al Hilal to celebrate a famous victory.
