Mamelodi Sundowns edge Orlando Pirates in title-race thriller

Mamelodi Sundowns reignited the Betway Premiership title race with a 2-1 victory over Orlando Pirates at the FNB Stadium in Johannesburg on Wednesday night. The clash, billed as a potential title decider, lived up to its hype with drama, intensity, and goals from two of the league’s standout performers.

The Buccaneers started brightly, pressing high and forcing Sundowns goalkeeper Ronwen Williams into two crucial saves in the opening quarter. Deon Hotto and Yanela Mbuthuma both came close, but Sundowns’ defense held firm.

Against the run of play, Sundowns forward Brayan Leon stunned the home crowd with a quick-fire brace before halftime. His first came from a sharp finish inside the box, and minutes later he doubled the lead with a composed strike after a slick counterattack.

Pirates responded after the break, with Patrick Maswanganyi pulling one back early in the second half to spark hopes of a comeback. The Soweto giants piled on the pressure, but Sundowns’ backline — marshaled by Khulumani Ndamane — stood tall to secure all three points.
