CAF President Dr Patrice Motsepe Holds Press Conference in Johannesburg

The President of the Confédération Africaine de Football (CAF), Dr Patrice Motsepe, addressed members of the media at the Sandton Sun Hotel in Johannesburg on Wednesday, 22 July 2026. In one of the most notable announcements, Dr Motsepe confirmed a record increase in prize money for the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON). Winners will now receive USD 2 million (about R33 million), doubling the previous amount. Runners-up will earn USD 750,000, while third place will take home USD 500,000. Each of the 16 participating teams will also receive USD 150,000 as a participation fee. This landmark decision underscores CAF’s commitment to elevating women’s football and ensuring greater financial rewards for players and federations.

Dr Motsepe also reflected on Africa’s historic showing at the World Cup, where a record number of African teams advanced beyond the group stages. He emphasized that this success demonstrates the continent’s growing competitiveness and pledged further investment in infrastructure, youth development, and coaching to build on the momentum.
