FC Copenhagen Sign Thapelo Maseko: Mamelodi Sundowns Star Moves to Denmark
FC Copenhagen have officially announced the signing of Thapelo Maseko, the South African international attacker, on a four-year deal. The 22-year-old forward arrives from Mamelodi Sundowns, where he impressed with his pace, versatility, and attacking flair in the Premier Soccer League.
In their statement, Copenhagen said: “F.C. Copenhagen are delighted to announce the signing of South Africa international Thapelo Maseko. The 22-year-old moves to Copenhagen from Mamelodi Sundowns on a four-year contract, arriving in the Danish capital on the back of impressive performances in South African football.”
Director of Football Kristjaan Speakman welcomed the addition, highlighting Maseko’s ability to provide extra options in attack. “We’re building a balanced squad with different profiles and Thapelo is an exciting addition. He’s comfortable to play on both sides of the pitch and likes to attack space with and without the ball. His game is progressing and recent exposure at international level has shown his ability to play on the biggest stage.”
Speakman further praised Maseko’s patience and determination to join Copenhagen, noting that the acquisition was competitive. “He’s been patient and shown a strong desire to join F.C. Copenhagen, it was a competitive process to acquire him, and we are very happy to welcome him into our group.”
Head coach Bo Svensson also expressed excitement about working with the South African forward. “In Thapelo, we get an explosive, dynamic player with exceptional qualities in direct, 1-on-1 situations. His pace and ability to challenge his direct opponent will make him a constant threat in behind, but he can also use his left foot to assist teammates when cutting inside.”
Svensson acknowledged that there are still elements of Maseko’s game to refine but emphasized his high potential and relentless work ethic. “There are naturally still elements to refine, but Thapelo’s potential is high, and he always works tirelessly for the team, so we are really looking forward to working with him on a daily basis.”
For Maseko, the move represents a major step in his career. Having already established himself as a Bafana Bafana international, the opportunity to test himself in Europe’s competitive environment will be crucial for his development and exposure on the global stage.
The forward is set to wear the number 12 shirt at Copenhagen, a symbolic fresh start as he embarks on his journey in the Danish Superliga. Fans of both Sundowns and Copenhagen will be eager to see how his explosive pace and attacking instincts translate to European football.
