“We Know What This Badge Means” – Pitso Mosimane’s Message to Mzansi
Bafana Bafana head coach Pitso Mosimane has officially begun his second permanent spell in charge of the South African national team, taking to the training ground on Monday as preparations got underway for the start of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifying campaign.
Mosimane oversaw his first training session at the University of Johannesburg’s Auckland Park sports fields, where players reported for camp ahead of a busy international window. The session marked the beginning of a new chapter for the national team as the experienced coach looks to guide South Africa back to the top of African football.
Shortly after the training session, Mosimane shared a message on social media, making it clear that his full focus is on the task ahead. “And so, the work has started,” the Bafana mentor wrote on X as he officially kicked off his latest journey with the national team.
The 62-year-old also spoke about what it means to once again lead his country, emphasising the pride and responsibility that comes with the role. “It is a privilege to once again serve my country and lead our national team. The responsibility is enormous, but so is the pride,” said Mosimane.
His return has generated excitement among South African football supporters, many of whom believe his wealth of experience at club and international level can help elevate Bafana Bafana to new heights. Having enjoyed successful spells with some of Africa’s biggest clubs, Mosimane now faces the challenge of translating that success onto the national team stage.
Mosimane also acknowledged the expectations that come with the job and the significance of representing the nation. “We know what lies ahead. We know what this badge means to millions of South Africans,” he said, highlighting the importance of delivering results for the country’s passionate football supporters.
Attention now turns to Saturday’s AFCON qualifier against Guinea at Orlando Amstel Arena in Soweto. The match will officially launch South Africa’s Group D campaign and provide Mosimane with his first competitive test since taking over from Hugo Broos.
With anticipation building ahead of the encounter, fans are expected to turn out in large numbers to witness the beginning of a new era. Tickets for the match are available through Ticketpro at R100 for adults and R40 for children under 12, while hospitality packages (on 082 805 3150 or bookings@sail.co.za) are also available for supporters looking to enjoy a premium matchday experience as Bafana Bafana embark on their road to AFCON 2027.
