International Break Brings Reflection as Coaching Changes Shake Up the League

The 2026/27 Betway Premiership season may be only eight matches old for most clubs, but the pressure is already taking its toll on several head coaches. As teams head into the FIFA international break, club executives have been given an opportunity to assess performances, identify weaknesses and determine whether those in charge are still the right men for the job.

While some clubs have enjoyed promising starts to the campaign, others have struggled to find consistency, leading to a growing list of coaching casualties. With the league set to resume in October, supporters are already speculating about which club could be next to make a change on the sidelines.

The first major coaching change of the season came at Sekhukhune United, who opted to part ways with Cedric Kaze following a disappointing start. The club responded quickly by appointing Papi Zothwane as head coach, hoping he can guide Babina Noko back up the table and into contention for a top-eight finish.

Siwelele FC also made an early change after enduring a winless start to their return to the top flight. The club dismissed Lehlohonolo Seema and placed Godfrey Mosoetsa in temporary charge. At present, Siwelele remain the only Betway Premiership club operating under a caretaker coach.

Marumo Gallants became the third club to pull the trigger after a difficult opening to the season. Phuti Mohafe was relieved of his duties after failing to register a victory in the club’s first five league matches. The Limpopo outfit subsequently turned to Ronnie Kanalelo in the hope of sparking an immediate improvement in results.

Richards Bay FC also underwent a change in leadership following the departure of Ronnie Gabriel. The KwaZulu-Natal side acted swiftly by appointing Dimitar Pantev as the club’s new head coach as they continue their battle to climb away from the lower reaches of the standings.

Another club facing uncertainty is TS Galaxy. Chairman Tim Sukazi recently confirmed that Bernard Parker will move into an assistant coaching role to further his coaching education. The Rockets are expected to appoint an experienced and highly qualified head coach after the international break, meaning Parker’s tenure in charge appears to be nearing its conclusion.

Durban City FC’s coaching situation remains one of the biggest talking points in the league. Although the club has yet to officially confirm any coaching changes, reports have suggested that Khalil Ben Youssef has been dismissed. Former Bafana Bafana and Cape Town City coach Eric Tinkler is widely reported to be the frontrunner to take over, although no official announcement has been made by the club.

With four coaching changes already confirmed, another club searching for a permanent head coach, and uncertainty continuing at Durban City FC, the international break has become a crucial period for decision-makers across the league. Results after the October restart could ultimately determine whether more coaches keep their jobs or join the growing list of early-season casualties.

The Betway Premiership has once again shown that success is demanded immediately. For coaches, the race is not only about winning matches and climbing the table, but also about surviving the relentless pressure that comes with managing in South Africa’s top flight.
