Abdeslam Ouaddou and Tapelo Xoki Outline Orlando Pirates’ MTN8 Final Mission
Orlando Pirates head coach Abdeslam Ouaddou and captain Tapelo Xoki have made it clear that the club is fully focused on retaining the MTN8 title as preparations continue for the highly anticipated final against Mamelodi Sundowns.
Speaking during the official pre-match press conference at Rand Stadium in Johannesburg on Monday, Ouaddou reflected on the challenges of preparing for a major final during an international break. With several players away on national team duty, the coach admitted that maintaining rhythm and focus within the squad required careful management from the technical team.
Despite those challenges, Ouaddou expressed confidence in the work completed by the players over the past few weeks. He stressed that the team remains motivated to defend the trophy and deliver another strong performance on one of the biggest stages in South African football.
Captain Tapelo Xoki echoed his coach’s sentiments and highlighted the determination within the dressing room. The Pirates skipper said the squad is eager to make history and reward the club’s supporters with another memorable occasion.
Ouaddou also spoke about the demands of facing a quality side such as Sundowns in a cup final. While acknowledging the importance of previous meetings and past achievements, he insisted that finals are unique encounters that require complete focus, discipline and tactical execution from the first whistle to the last.
The coach emphasised the importance of being organised in both defence and attack, noting that success will depend on how well his side manages key moments throughout the match. He believes concentration and efficiency in both penalty areas could ultimately determine the outcome of the contest.
Fitness and player availability were also discussed during the press conference. Ouaddou and Xoki praised the commitment shown by players returning from lengthy injury setbacks, acknowledging the mental strength and resilience required to work their way back into contention.
Xoki further highlighted his responsibility as one of the senior figures in the squad. The defender explained that experienced players have an important role to play in helping younger teammates understand the culture, standards and expectations that come with representing Orlando Pirates as the club chases another piece of silverware.
