PRASA and PSL Partner to Get Fans to Moses Mabhida for MTN8 Showpiece
Football supporters travelling to Durban for the highly anticipated MTN8 final between Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns will have an alternative transport option after Metrorail and the Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (PRASA) confirmed the introduction of special train services for match day.
The initiative forms part of a partnership between PRASA and the Premier Soccer League (PSL), aimed at improving accessibility and enhancing the overall match-day experience for supporters attending the showpiece event at Moses Mabhida Stadium.
Speaking at Rand Stadium in Johannesburg, PRASA Group Marketing representative Zipho Mlambo announced that the rail agency is working closely with the PSL to ensure fans can travel to and from the stadium safely, efficiently and affordably.
The MTN8 final is expected to attract thousands of supporters from across KwaZulu-Natal and beyond, with Pirates and Sundowns set to renew one of South African football’s biggest rivalries in a blockbuster clash.
Mlambo explained that designated train services will operate on several key corridors, including Umlazi, KwaMashu, Bridge City, Pinetown and Crossmoor, providing supporters with convenient access to transport hubs ahead of kick-off.
In addition to the dedicated routes, a shuttle service will run between Durban Station and Moses Mabhida Stadium throughout the afternoon before the match. The shuttle service will also operate after the final whistle, ensuring supporters have reliable transport back from the venue.
The partnership between PRASA and the PSL is also intended to reduce pressure on Durban’s road network by encouraging fans to make use of rail transport rather than private vehicles. The agency believes this will help ease congestion around the stadium precinct on one of the biggest football days of the year.
Passenger safety remains a key priority, with on-board security forming part of the operational plan. Supporters will also benefit from an affordable return fare while avoiding traffic congestion and parking challenges. With anticipation building ahead of the final, the PRASA-PSL collaboration is expected to play a crucial role in helping Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns fans reach Moses Mabhida Stadium comfortably and on time.
