Road to Carling Knockout Glory Begins With Today’s Round of 16 Draw
The wait is finally over for South African football fans as the Carling Knockout officially takes centre stage today, with the Round of 16 draw set to determine the opening fixtures of one of the country’s most anticipated cup competitions.
All 16 Betway Premiership clubs will discover their opponents as the tournament gets underway, marking the beginning of another battle for knockout glory. The draw will not only reveal the first-round matchups but also provide an early indication of each team’s possible route to the final.
Excitement is building among supporters across the country, with every club hoping to secure a favourable draw and build momentum in a competition renowned for producing drama and surprises.
A key feature of the draw is the seeding system, which is based on the final standings from last season’s Betway Premiership campaign. The structure has been designed to reward teams that finished in the top half of the table.
According to the draw procedure, the eight highest-placed teams from last season have been placed in the seeded pot, ensuring they cannot face one another during the Round of 16 stage.
This means league champions Orlando Pirates, runners-up Mamelodi Sundowns and third-placed Kaizer Chiefs are protected from meeting each other in the opening round of the competition.
The remaining seeded teams are AmaZulu FC, Sekhukhune United, Lamontville Golden Arrows, Polokwane City and Durban City, all of whom secured top-eight finishes in the previous league campaign.
Waiting in the unseeded pot are Stellenbosch FC, Siwelele FC, Richards Bay FC, TS Galaxy, Chippa United, Marumo Gallants, Kruger United and Milford FC.
The draw procedure will involve selecting one club from the seeded bowl and one from the unseeded bowl before determining which side will enjoy home advantage in the Round of 16 clash.
As a result, every seeded club is guaranteed to face an opponent from the unseeded group, creating a balanced opening round and preventing heavyweight encounters at the first hurdle.
While supporters may have hoped for blockbuster fixtures involving some of the country’s biggest clubs, those meetings will have to wait until later rounds should the favourites progress.
That setup also increases the possibility of underdogs causing major upsets, a hallmark of the Carling Knockout over the years. Clubs from the unseeded pot will be eager to make an immediate statement against more fancied opposition.
With anticipation reaching fever pitch, all eyes will now be on the draw as teams and supporters alike discover the matchups that will shape the opening chapter of this season’s Carling Knockout journey.
