Papi Zothwane Proud of Fight Despite Sekhukhune United’s Carling Knockout Exit
Sekhukhune United head coach Papi Zothwane praised his players’ effort and commitment despite their narrow defeat to Orlando Pirates in the Carling Knockout Cup, insisting that a costly lapse of concentration ultimately proved decisive.
Speaking after the match, Zothwane admitted the result was disappointing but felt his side largely executed the game plan as intended. The coach commended his players for their discipline, work rate and willingness to follow tactical instructions against one of the country’s strongest teams.
According to Zothwane, the decisive moment came from a dead-ball situation where his side briefly switched off, allowing Pirates to capitalize. He believed that concentration levels were generally good throughout the contest, making the goal even more frustrating to concede.
The Sekhukhune United mentor revealed that his initial tactical setup was designed to limit Pirates’ attacking threats. By strengthening the defensive structure, he hoped to deny the Buccaneers space and opportunities in dangerous areas of the pitch.
As the match progressed, however, Zothwane made adjustments aimed at increasing his team’s attacking threat. The changes allowed Sekhukhune to enjoy more possession, spend longer periods in the opposition half and apply greater pressure as they searched for an equaliser.
Despite the defeat, the coach was encouraged by the reaction shown by his players. He felt the team demonstrated character and showed signs of growth against quality opposition, even if they were unable to find the breakthrough they needed.
When questioned about Sekhukhune’s tendency to raise their performance against bigger opponents, Zothwane stressed that consistency remains the ultimate objective. He believes the club must approach every match with the same hunger, determination and desire to improve.
The coach also dismissed suggestions of a psychological barrier against Orlando Pirates. While acknowledging the quality within the Buccaneers camp, Zothwane insisted that his team’s focus remains on improving their own performances, sharpening their technical ability and continuing their development as they look to turn positive displays into victories.
