Durban Declares Itself South Africa’s Sporting Capital Ahead of MTN8 Final

The KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Government has welcomed the confirmation of Moses Mabhida Stadium as the host venue for the eagerly anticipated MTN8 final between Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns. The blockbuster fixture is scheduled to kick off at 18h00 on Saturday, 10 October 2026, with thousands of supporters expected to descend on Durban for one of the biggest matches of the season.

In a statement, the provincial government described the occasion as a major boost for the province and a further endorsement of Durban’s reputation as a leading destination for major sporting events. The government said the announcement “cements the uncontested truth that Durban is the best host city for major sporting events.”

The Provincial Government also pointed to KwaZulu-Natal’s growing influence in South African football. The province currently boasts the highest number of clubs competing in the Betway Premiership, with AmaZulu FC, Durban City FC, Lamontville Golden Arrows, Richards Bay FC and newly promoted Milford FC all flying the provincial flag this season.

Officials believe hosting another major domestic cup final will strengthen the province’s football profile while providing local supporters with an opportunity to witness elite football on their doorstep. The government noted that bringing major matches to eThekwini increases the number of high-profile games played in KwaZulu-Natal and contributes positively to the local economy.

Moses Mabhida Stadium has built a reputation as one of South Africa’s premier sporting venues and is no stranger to hosting major football occasions. The stadium has staged several MTN8 finals over the years, including the memorable showdown between Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns in the 2023 final, which Pirates won after a dramatic penalty shootout.

KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Sport, Arts and Culture, Mntomuhle Khawula, said the announcement would generate excitement among football supporters across the country. He believes the final will deliver significant economic benefits for Durban and surrounding areas.

“As the KZN Provincial Government we welcome the announcement of Moses Mabhida as the venue for the 2026 MTN8 final between the two most successful teams in recent history,” said Khawula. He added that the festivities surrounding the match would result in increased occupancy in hospitality establishments, growth in the transport sector and valuable trading opportunities for informal vendors.

The MEC further highlighted the province’s proven ability to host major events. “We are a province of winners; we have proven time and again that we are the sports mecca of South Africa and a destination of choice for major sport and conferencing events,” said Khawula.

He also expressed confidence that the occasion would inspire local football clubs while reassuring travelling supporters that their safety would remain a priority. “We promise to be exceptional hosts, and we can assure our visitors that their safety is our priority and great hospitality is guaranteed,” he said.

With Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns set to battle for MTN8 glory, the KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Government has encouraged football lovers to purchase their tickets early and enjoy the spectacle responsibly. The province is preparing to welcome supporters to “kwelikaBhanana, eThekwini – the Warmest City with two seasons, Summer and Summer” as excitement builds ahead of the much-anticipated final.
