Ronwen Williams Confident as Bafana Bafana Target Back-to-Back AFCON Qualifying Wins

Bafana Bafana will be aiming to maintain their perfect start to the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifying campaign when they take on Eritrea on Wednesday, 30 September 2026, evening at Al-Salam Stadium in Cairo, Egypt. South Africa opened their Group campaign with an important 2-1 victory over Guinea, at Orlando Amstel Arena in Soweto, and will be eager to collect another three points to strengthen their position at the top of the standings.

Eritrea enter the encounter after securing a 1-1 draw against Kenya in Nairobi, a result that demonstrated their ability to compete against strong opposition. The East African side will be looking to build on that performance and frustrate Bafana Bafana, who are widely viewed as favourites heading into the contest.

Speaking ahead of the match, Bafana Bafana captain Ronwen Williams revealed that the mood within the camp remains positive following the victory over Guinea. The experienced goalkeeper explained that the team has focused on both physical and mental recovery during training sessions in Cairo as they prepare for a demanding second qualifier.

Williams also highlighted how the squad has adjusted to life under head coach Pitso Mosimane. Despite the recent change in technical leadership, the captain said the players have embraced the coach’s methods and tactical approach. According to Williams, the team’s understanding of Mosimane’s instructions was already evident during their successful outing against Guinea.

The Bafana Bafana skipper stressed that securing points early in the qualifying campaign is a major priority for the team. He believes establishing momentum at this stage of the competition can help the squad settle into the campaign and approach future fixtures with confidence and greater freedom.

With confidence high in the camp and another valuable three points on the line, Bafana Bafana will be determined to deliver another strong performance against Eritrea. Williams expects the players to approach the match without anxiety, focusing instead on executing their game plan as South Africa seek to take another significant step towards qualification for the 2027 AFCON tournament.
