Dr Doctor Khumalo Takes Key SAFA Role as NEC Reshuffles Leadership

The South African Football Association (SAFA) has strengthened its leadership structures following an Ordinary National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting held in Sandton, Johannesburg, on Sunday. The meeting saw members elect new vice presidents and address several strategic matters aimed at advancing football development across the country.

Among the notable appointments was former Bafana Bafana midfielder Dr Doctor Khumalo, who has been named vice chairman of the SAFA Technical Committee. The appointment places one of South Africa’s most respected football figures at the heart of the country’s football development plans.

Khumalo’s new role will see him help shape and oversee South Africa’s national football development strategy. Working closely with SAFA’s technical structures, he is expected to play a significant role in ensuring that football standards continue to improve from grassroots level through to the senior national teams.

As vice chairman, Khumalo will assist in supervising coaching development programmes across the country. His responsibilities also include contributing to talent identification initiatives aimed at uncovering the next generation of stars capable of representing South Africa on the international stage.

The former Kaizer Chiefs legend will further be involved in monitoring and evaluating performances across all national teams. This process is regarded as a crucial element in ensuring consistency and competitiveness within SAFA’s football structures.

Khumalo’s expertise will also be called upon when it comes to selecting national team coaches. Together with the Technical Committee, he will help assess candidates while ensuring their philosophies align with SAFA’s long-term football objectives.

Another key aspect of his duties will involve helping align South African football tactics and methodologies with international best practices and FIFA standards. This forms part of SAFA’s broader Vision 2030 programme, which seeks to elevate the country’s football standing globally.

Speaking after the NEC meeting, SAFA President Dr Danny Jordaan confirmed that several committees had been constituted to support the association’s strategic goals. These include the Technical, Finance, Schools and Competitions committees, among others.

The appointment adds another significant chapter to Khumalo’s distinguished football career. Earlier this year, he was awarded an honorary Doctor of Philosophy in Science (Kinesiology and Coaching Science) by the Tshwane University of Technology (TUT), a recognition of his contribution to football and sports development.

The honour carried extra significance because “Doctor” is not only his title but also his birth name, given to him by his father. Now officially known as Dr Doctor Khumalo, the South African football icon will bring both academic recognition and decades of football experience to a role that could help shape the future of the game in the country.
