Kaizer Chiefs’ CAF Dream Ends in Penalty Heartbreak Against Red Arrows
Kaizer Chiefs’ CAF Confederation Cup campaign came to a painful end after they were defeated 3-2 on penalties by Zambia’s Red Arrows at the Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban on Friday night.
The Soweto giants entered the second-leg encounter trailing 1-0 from the first leg in Ndola and knew they needed a strong response to keep their continental hopes alive. Chiefs produced an improved display and managed to level the tie on aggregate, but ultimately fell short in the shootout.
Red Arrows threatened early in the contest and nearly increased their aggregate advantage in the eighth minute. Goalkeeper Bruce Bvuma came to Chiefs’ rescue with an excellent save to deny the Zambian visitors and keep the hosts in the tie.
Chiefs responded with an opportunity of their own three minutes later. Thulani Mabaso found space and fired an effort at goal, but Red Arrows goalkeeper Kalumba was equal to the task, producing a save to keep the score level.
Despite several promising moments from both sides, neither team managed to find the breakthrough before the interval. The first half ended goalless on the night, with Red Arrows maintaining their 1-0 aggregate advantage heading into the second half.
Chiefs coach Fernando Da Cruz responded by introducing Mfundo Vilakazi for Faiz Abrahams in the 58th minute, searching for greater attacking urgency. The hosts continued to press forward, and Pule Mmodi tested Charles Kalumba in the 63rd minute, but the Red Arrows shot-stopper once again came up with a crucial save.
The breakthrough finally arrived in the 66th minute when Bradley Cross delivered for Amakhosi. The defender found the back of the net to hand Chiefs a 1-0 lead on the night and level the tie at 1-1 on aggregate, reigniting hopes of a comeback.
Chiefs continued to push for a decisive second goal and made further changes, introducing Lebohang Maboe for Mabaso before later bringing on Asanele Velebayi and Ethan Chislett. Mdu Shabalala came close in the 79th minute after good work from Vilakazi, while another effort from close range was saved in the 84th minute. Velebayi also had a chance two minutes later but failed to hit the target.
With neither side able to find a winner, the contest moved to penalties after the aggregate score remained tied at 1-1. The shootout proved cruel for Amakhosi as Red Arrows held their nerve to secure a 3-2 victory from the spot kicks.
The result sees Kaizer Chiefs bow out of the CAF Confederation Cup despite winning 1-0 on the night through Cross’ second-half strike. Red Arrows progress to the next stage of the competition, while Chiefs are left to reflect on missed opportunities after dominating large periods of the return leg in Durban.
