Evidence Makgopa Brace Fires Orlando Pirates Into Champions League Group Stage
Orlando Pirates booked their place in the CAF Champions League group stage after a dominant 4-0 victory over Namibian champions African Stars at the Orlando Amstel Arena on Friday night. The Buccaneers completed a commanding 5-0 aggregate success after carrying a 1-0 advantage from the first leg.
Despite their aggregate lead, Pirates were forced to remain alert in the opening exchanges. African Stars earned an early corner in the second minute following a defensive error, but the danger was quickly dealt with as Evidence Makgopa headed the resulting set-piece clear.
The hosts soon took control of proceedings and began creating opportunities. In the 11th minute, Bulelani Sigomoshe burst behind the visitors’ defence and attempted to pick out Makgopa with a cutback, only for the African Stars backline to intervene at the last moment.
A minute later, Makgopa had a chance of his own when he found space inside the area, but goalkeeper Mervin Kasetura produced a vital save to keep the score level. Pirates, however, continued to apply pressure and looked increasingly dangerous going forward.
The breakthrough finally arrived in the 17th minute when Thapelo Mokobodi found the back of the net to put Pirates 1-0 ahead on the night. The goal strengthened the Buccaneers’ grip on the tie and left the visitors with a mountain to climb.
Mokobodi nearly doubled his tally before the half-hour mark, unleashing an effort from range that flashed narrowly wide of the target. Pirates remained on the front foot and continued searching for a second goal before the interval.
Their persistence paid off in first-half stoppage time when Makgopa got his reward. The striker struck in the 45th minute to hand Pirates a 2-0 lead heading into the break and extend their aggregate advantage to 3-0.
The second half could not have started any better for the Soweto giants. Substitute Mpho Padime, who had replaced Tshepang Moremi at halftime, made an instant impact by scoring less than a minute after the restart to put Pirates 3-0 up and effectively end the contest.
Padime almost grabbed a second goal in the 57th minute but saw his curling effort drift just wide. Pirates continued to dominate possession and attacking territory, while further substitutions allowed several players to get valuable minutes as the hosts comfortably managed the game.
Makgopa completed a memorable evening in the 77th minute with his second goal of the match, making it 4-0 on the night. African Stars goalkeeper Kasetura produced another save late on to deny Simphiwe Selepe, but the final whistle confirmed a comprehensive victory. Pirates marched into the CAF Champions League group stage with a 5-0 aggregate triumph, underlining their continental ambitions with a ruthless display in front of their home supporters.
