SAFA President Dr Danny Jordaan backtracks on Bafana Bafana bonus

South African Football Association (SAFA) President Dr Danny Jordaan has made a u-turn on the bonus statement he made that Bafana Bafana players will pocket $7 million (R131 million) if they win the Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast.

In a video shared by SAFA Media on Sunday, Dr Jordaan said: “I am here to make sure that every box has been ticked, there’s nothing outstanding, and that everything is in place for them to focus on football, deliver on football, and give us the kind of performances that will make the nation take a deep breath and say we have a team.

“We have to get the team to focus, we have to clear everything, and if they (Bafana Bafana win, they get $7 million (R131 million), if they lose they get nothing. We want the team to focus and perform. We have over a period of time settled this team and we don’t want to waste time discussing unnecessary stuff.”

However, on Monday, Dr Jordaan speaking to Thabiso Mosia on Radio 2000 said he was stunned to see headlines saying the South African Football Association is giving players the $7 million.

“I did not say that the players will share [$]7 million,” said Dr Jordaan. “All I was saying regarding the bonuses is that CAF has increased prize money to $7 million. That’s the money allocated to the winner. I’m surprised to now see headlines saying SAFA is giving players the [$]7 million.”
