Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium declared structurally sound after storm damage

The Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality (NMBM) has confirmed that the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium remains structurally sound following the severe weather that battered the city in recent days. Despite high winds and heavy rains, engineers have verified that the facility’s integrity is intact, with damage limited to a single canvas leaf and cable section on the North side.

Immediate measures have been taken to secure the site. The torn canvas is being cut away and neatened, while the affected cable will be fully reinforced to ensure long-term stability. Officials emphasized that there is no immediate danger to the public, though the North section has been cordoned off and access restricted to authorized personnel while repair work is prioritized.

In a statement released on X, the stadium management reassured supporters and residents: “The Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium has sustained a small amount of damage due to high winds and damaging rains in the city. Engineers have confirmed that the affected area appears to be structurally sound, with the damage limited to one canvas leaf and cable section on the North side of the stadium. Immediate steps have been taken to secure the area and assess what actions should take priority. The torn canvas will be cut away and neatened, and the damaged cable will be fully secured. While there is no immediate danger, the area is cordoned off, and access is restricted for all non-authorized personnel.”

The swift response highlights the municipality’s commitment to safety and the preservation of one of the city’s most iconic sporting venues. With repairs underway, officials are confident the stadium will continue to host events without disruption.
