Desiree Ellis to name squad for Japan friendlies following Algeria success

The South African Football Association (SAFA), in partnership with Sasol, has confirmed that a press conference will be held to announce the Banyana Banyana squad set to face Japan in away international friendly matches next month. The event is scheduled for Thursday, 14 May 2026, at the SABC television studios in Auckland Park, with proceedings beginning at 12h00.

These friendlies form part of South Africa’s preparations for the 2026 CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), which has been postponed by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) to run from 25 July to 16 August 2026 in Morocco. Originally scheduled for March, the tournament was delayed due to logistical challenges, leaving teams scrambling to adjust their build-up plans.

The clash against Japan will be a crucial test for Banyana Banyana, especially after their recent double-header against Algeria. On 14 April 2026, South Africa defeated Algeria 1-0 at the Princess Magogo Stadium in KwaMashu. The match also marked a milestone for veteran defender Bambanani Mbane, who earned her 100th international cap.

In the second fixture, played on 17 April 2026 at the King Zwelithini Stadium in Umlazi, Banyana Banyana secured a convincing 2-0 victory. The result capped off a strong series for head coach Desiree Ellis, who emphasized the importance of giving local players minutes and building cohesion ahead of the postponed WAFCON.

These matches against Algeria provided valuable lessons in resilience and tactical discipline, and the upcoming friendlies against Japan will further sharpen the team’s readiness for continental competition. Facing a world-class opponent like Japan ensures South Africa continues to measure itself against elite standards.

Importantly, Ellis will personally name the squad that will travel to Japan, a moment eagerly awaited by fans and stakeholders. For supporters, the squad announcement is more than just a list of names — it is a statement of intent. With WAFCON now set for mid-year, Banyana Banyana’s journey continues to inspire, and the Japan friendlies will serve as another stepping stone toward reclaiming continental glory.
