Orlando Pirates Apologise After Stadium Lockdown Disrupts Milford FC Fixture
Orlando Pirates Football Club has issued a formal apology to supporters following the disruption during Saturday’s Betway Premiership clash against Milford FC at the Orlando Amstel Arena. The club acknowledged the inconvenience caused when gates were closed mid-match, leaving many valid ticket holders unable to gain entry.
In its official statement, the club said: “Orlando Pirates Football Club sincerely apologizes to all the supporters who experienced inconvenience during Saturday’s Betway Premiership fixture against Milford FC at Orlando Amstel Arena.”
The decision to close the stadium gates was made by the Venue Operations Centre (VOC), which acted in the interest of public safety. Pirates explained that the operational measure was necessary to safeguard the wellbeing of spectators, players, match officials, staff, and other stakeholders present at the venue.
The lockdown was triggered by the activities of criminal syndicates operating around the stadium precinct. These groups were reportedly selling counterfeit tickets and enabling unlawful entry of individuals without valid tickets, creating an unacceptable risk to public safety and the safe management of the event.
Pirates emphasized that while the decision was beyond their direct control, they fully acknowledge the frustration and disappointment experienced by supporters who held valid tickets but were denied entry. The club expressed regret that loyal fans were unable to enjoy the highly anticipated fixture.
To support those affected, the club confirmed that Open Tickets has been appointed to administer the refund process. Fans who purchased valid tickets but were unable to access the stadium due to the lockdown are eligible to apply for reimbursement.
The statement continued: “Supporters who are eligible for a refund are requested to contact Open Tickets at support@opentickets.co.za to initiate the refund process.” Pirates assured supporters that the process will be managed efficiently to ensure affected individuals are compensated.
In addition to addressing refunds, the Buccaneers reaffirmed their commitment to working closely with the Premier Soccer League, stadium management, law enforcement agencies, and other stakeholders. The goal is to strengthen matchday operations and prevent similar incidents in the future.
The club also pledged to intensify efforts to combat criminal activity around stadiums, noting that counterfeit ticket sales undermine both safety and the integrity of the sport. Pirates stressed that protecting supporters remains a top priority.
