Mamelodi Sundowns Secure Thabang Matuludi in Major Transfer Coup
Mamelodi Sundowns have officially announced the signing of Bafana Bafana defender Thabang Matuludi from Polokwane City, confirming the deal today, Friday, September 11, 2026. The 27-year-old right-back joins the reigning CAF Champions League winners, bringing his experience and consistency to Chloorkop as the Brazilians continue to strengthen their squad for both domestic and continental campaigns.
In their official statement, Sundowns expressed delight at the acquisition: “Mamelodi Sundowns are excited to welcome Thabang Matuludi to the Masandawana family.” This announcement underscores the club’s ambition to maintain dominance in the Betway Premiership while preparing for another push in Africa’s elite competitions.
Matuludi leaves Polokwane City after an impressive spell where he featured in 72 matches, scoring 6 goals and providing 2 assists. His attacking contributions from the right flank, combined with defensive solidity, made him one of the standout performers for Rise and Shine. His consistency and leadership qualities were pivotal in Polokwane’s rise in the Premiership, and his departure marks a significant loss for the Limpopo-based side.
According to media reports, Matuludi was also on the radar of Orlando Pirates, who had identified him as a potential reinforcement for their defensive line. However, Sundowns moved swiftly and decisively to secure his signature, ultimately winning the race against their Soweto rivals. This adds another layer of intrigue to the transfer, as it highlights Sundowns’ ability to outmaneuver competitors in the market.
For Sundowns, the signing represents both depth and tactical versatility. Matuludi’s ability to overlap, deliver precise crosses, and track back defensively fits perfectly into the Brazilians’ high-tempo, possession-based style. His arrival ensures competition for places in the right-back position, adding balance to a squad already brimming with talent.
The move also highlights Sundowns’ continued strategy of recruiting proven performers from within the league. By securing Matuludi, they not only strengthen their own ranks but also weaken a potential challenger. His transition to Chloorkop will be closely watched by fans eager to see how he adapts to the demands of a club with continental ambitions.
As Matuludi embarks on this new chapter, his journey from Polokwane City to Sundowns reflects the dynamic nature of South African football, where standout performers are rewarded with opportunities at the country’s biggest clubs. Supporters of Masandawana will be hoping that his defensive prowess and attacking contributions help propel the team to further glory in the seasons ahead.
