SAFA Elections: Death Threats Rock SAFA Elective Congress as Tensions Explode

The South African Football Association (SAFA) is preparing for one of its most pivotal elections in recent memory, as Dr Danny Jordaan faces off against Sandile Zungu for the presidency. The Elective Congress, scheduled for Saturday, 12 September 2026, will determine the leadership of South African football at a time of heightened tension and scrutiny.

In the days leading up to the vote, SAFA revealed disturbing developments. “The South African Football Association (SAFA) has revealed that several delegates have received death threats while others have been harassed and intimidated ahead of the SAFA Elective Congress.” This statement underscores the volatile atmosphere surrounding the election, raising concerns about the safety of those tasked with shaping the future of the sport.

The association has responded firmly to these threats. “SAFA takes these threats very seriously and the police will be notified accordingly. The SAFA Elective Congress will be held on Saturday, 12 September 2026 and security around the venue has been tightened after the threats were sent to the delegates.” With police involvement and enhanced security measures, SAFA is determined to ensure that the democratic process is not undermined.

Despite attempts to derail the proceedings, SAFA insists the election will go ahead. “These threats and intimidation are an escalation after the calculated attempts to derail the Elective Congress and cast aspersions about the processes failed to achieve the desired objective. The Elective Congress will go ahead as planned after weeks of planning and preparation, and SAFA will protect the right of its members to freely exercise their right to elect leaders of their choice.” This declaration reflects the association’s commitment to safeguarding the integrity of the vote.

The scope of the election extends beyond the presidency. “The elections will be held for the position of SAFA president, the national executive committee as well as the provincial office. SAFA held an Extraordinary NEC Meeting in Midrand on Friday ahead of the Elective Congress.” This ensures that leadership at multiple levels of the organization will be refreshed or reaffirmed.

The voting members represent a broad spectrum of South African football. “The voting members on 12 September 2026 will be the Regions, the Premier Soccer League as the Special Member and Associate Members.” This diverse electorate ensures that grassroots voices, professional leagues, and associate bodies all play a role in shaping the outcome.

The Congress will also be observed by international and national stakeholders. “SAFA has invited various stakeholders to the Elective Congress, including FIFA, CAF, COSAFA, SASCOC, Minister of Sports, Arts and Culture Gayton McKenzie and legends of the game, among others.” Their presence highlights the significance of the election not only for South Africa but for the broader football community.

As Jordaan seeks to extend his tenure and Zungu campaigns on promises of reform, the election represents a crossroads for South African football. With heightened security and global attention, the Elective Congress will be more than a vote—it will be a test of resilience, credibility, and the future direction of the sport.
