Khalil Ben Youssef Laments Missed Chances as Durban City Fall to Orlando Pirates
Durban City FC head coach Khalil Ben Youssef believes his side paid the price for failing to convert their opportunities in their defeat to Orlando Pirates at the Orlando Amstel Arena. Speaking after the match, the coach felt his team produced several positive moments but ultimately lacked the finishing touch when it mattered most.
Ben Youssef revealed that the game plan worked well during the opening stages of the encounter. Durban City aimed to apply pressure high up the pitch and exploit spaces behind the Pirates defence, and he was pleased with how his players executed those tactical instructions for large periods of the match.
Despite creating promising opportunities, the coach admitted that poor finishing remains a concern for his side. He pointed to several clear scoring chances that went begging and described the team’s inability to convert opportunities as a recurring issue that continues to affect results.
The Durban City mentor also highlighted several factors that contributed to the defeat. He cited costly individual mistakes, the physical demands of long-distance travel, and the challenges of managing a relatively small squad as obstacles his team had to overcome.
Ben Youssef acknowledged that the team is still adapting to a new playing system and believes improvement will come with time. He also confirmed that the club is looking at ways to strengthen the squad, including promoting players from the DDC side and assessing free agents as they seek greater depth.
Looking ahead, the coach remained positive about the mentality within the camp. He explained that the captaincy responsibilities are shared among a leadership group and stressed the importance of professionalism regardless of the opposition. Ben Youssef believes his squad has the character to respond positively and continue fighting for better results in the matches ahead.
