Eric Tinkler Returns to South African Football as Durban City Appoint New Head Coach

Durban City FC have officially appointed Eric Tinkler as their new head coach, handing the experienced tactician the responsibility of leading the club into the next phase of what promises to be a demanding season. The announcement comes after the club parted ways with Tunisian coach Khalil Ben Youssef and prepares to resume domestic competition following the FIFA international break.

The club described Tinkler’s arrival as a key appointment at an important stage of the campaign. Durban City have enjoyed a rapid rise in recent years and believe the former Orlando Pirates, Cape Town City and SuperSport United mentor is well equipped to continue that progress.

Speaking to Durban City’s official website, Tinkler expressed enthusiasm about joining a project he believes is headed in the right direction. He said Durban City’s ambition and achievements in a relatively short space of time played a major role in convincing him to return to South African football.

“The club is very ambitious, they have made positive strides in a short space of time, competing in the CAF Confederation Cup already, and that made my decision easy,” said Tinkler. The coach added that he is eager to contribute to the club’s long-term vision and help take the team to even greater heights.

Chairman Farook Kadodia welcomed the appointment and backed Tinkler to make a positive impact. Kadodia praised the coach’s extensive knowledge of the local game and believes his experience at the highest level of South African football will be a major asset for the club moving forward.

“Eric brings a wealth of experience in South African football and understands what is required at this level,” Kadodia said on the club’s website. “We believe he is the right person to lead the team and help us achieve what we have set out to achieve this season.”

The appointment follows Tinkler’s recent departure from Ghanaian giants Asante Kotoko. The South African coach left the club after requesting to be released from his contract for personal reasons. Despite efforts by the Ghanaian side to persuade him to remain, both parties eventually agreed to part ways.

A significant factor in Tinkler’s decision was the opportunity to reunite with Kadodia, with whom he previously worked at Maritzburg United. Their partnership produced notable moments, including a run to the Telkom Knockout final, and the coach admitted that the chance to work alongside the chairman again was difficult to ignore.

“The chairman is someone I’ve worked with before. When the opportunity presented itself to come back, I grabbed it with both hands,” Tinkler explained. His familiarity with the leadership structure at Durban City is expected to help him settle quickly into his new role.

Rather than introducing sweeping changes, Tinkler indicated that he intends to build on the foundations already established by the club. The coach acknowledged the success achieved over the past season and stressed the importance of maintaining continuity while creating opportunities for players to prove themselves.

“I don’t want to make massive changes because last season the club was successful,” he said. “It’s about giving others an opportunity and getting back to winning ways.” Tinkler also outlined ambitious targets, saying the team will aim for a top-eight finish while remaining competitive in the CAF Confederation Cup, Carling Cup and Nedbank Cup.

With Durban City competing on multiple fronts and expectations continuing to grow, Tinkler faces the challenge of balancing domestic and continental ambitions. However, the club’s hierarchy believes the former Bafana Bafana midfielder has the experience and leadership qualities needed to maintain the upward trajectory that has transformed Durban City into one of South African football’s emerging forces.
