Mamelodi Sundowns Land Former Siwelele FC Star Lazola Maku on Free Transfer

Mamelodi Sundowns have officially confirmed the signing of free agent Lazola Maku, with the highly rated 19-year-old midfielder joining the Brazilians after leaving Siwelele FC at the end of last season.

The Tshwane giants announced the arrival of the South African youth international, adding one of the country’s most promising young midfielders to their squad as they continue to invest in emerging talent.

Confirming the move, Sundowns said: “Mamelodi Sundowns are pleased to announce the signing of Lazola Maku!”

The club also called on supporters to welcome the teenager as he begins his journey at Chloorkop.

“Yellow Nation, let’s give the youngster a proper welcome,” Sundowns added in their announcement.

Maku joins the club as a free agent after his departure from Siwelele FC, a move that surprised many within South African football given his rapid development and growing reputation at youth international level.

Following his exit from Siwelele FC, the midfielder travelled to Austria for a trial as he explored opportunities abroad. While a European move did not materialise, Maku has now secured a transfer to one of Africa’s biggest clubs.

The youngster recently captained South Africa’s U20 national team to victory at the COSAFA U20 Youth Championship, further enhancing his reputation as one of the country’s brightest prospects. His leadership qualities played a key role in Amajita’s successful campaign.

Maku also arrives with valuable international experience, having been part of the South African side that won the 2025 U20 Africa Cup of Nations. He later represented his country at the 2025 FIFA U20 World Cup, competing against some of the world’s top young talents.

For Sundowns, the signing of the free agent represents another investment in the future. For Maku, it is an opportunity to continue his development at the highest level domestically as he looks to force his way into the club’s first-team plans and build on an already impressive young career.
