Mbekezeli Mbokazi’s MLS Recognition Comes as Bafana Bafana Await Kenya

Chicago Fire FC defender Mbekezeli Mbokazi has reached another major milestone in his rapidly developing career after being ranked fourth in the 2026 MLS 22 Under 22 rankings, making him the highest-ranked defender on the prestigious list.

The 21-year-old was beaten only by exciting attacking talents Cavan Sullivan, Julian Hall and Adri Mehmeti, further underlining his status as one of the brightest young footballers currently playing in North America.

Mbokazi’s inclusion among such highly regarded names speaks volumes about his performances this season. Sullivan is already set for a move to Manchester City, while Hall and Mehmeti have reportedly attracted interest from European powerhouses including RB Leipzig and Borussia Dortmund.

The South African defender has established himself as a key figure for Chicago Fire FC, producing a series of impressive displays that have earned praise from supporters, coaches and football analysts across the United States.

His performances have also sparked growing interest from Europe, with reports linking the Bafana Bafana star to clubs such as Napoli, Ajax and Real Betis as scouts continue to monitor his development.

Being named the top-ranked defender in the MLS 22 Under 22 rankings is further recognition of Mbokazi’s consistency and maturity. The accolade reinforces his reputation as one of the continent’s most promising young defenders.

The achievement is made even more remarkable by the challenges he has overcome in recent months. Following the 2026 FIFA World Cup, Mbokazi suffered a severe thigh tear that sidelined him during a crucial period for both club and country.

The injury forced him to miss Bafana Bafana’s opening two matches of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign in September. Despite his absence, South Africa made a perfect start under head coach Pitso Mosimane, defeating Guinea 2-1 before recording an emphatic 5-0 victory over Eritrea to move to the top of Group D.

Mbokazi, however, made a faster-than-expected recovery and returned to competitive action for Chicago Fire FC on 27 September 2026. His comeback provided another reminder of his determination and professionalism as he quickly returned to performing at a high level.

With Bafana Bafana set to face Kenya in a crucial AFCON qualifying double-header on 13 November in Soweto and 17 November in Nairobi, Mosimane will be delighted to have Mbokazi available once again. The defender’s return, coupled with his outstanding MLS form, could provide a significant boost as South Africa look to strengthen their grip on top spot in Group D.
