Siyanda Ndlovu Sends Mamelodi Sundowns Into Carling Knockout Quarter-Finals
Mamelodi Sundowns bounced back from their recent CAF Champions League disappointment by securing a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Marumo Gallants in the Carling Knockout Round of 16 at Loftus Versfeld Stadium on Tuesday evening. The win booked Bafana Ba Style a place in the quarter-finals and brought an immediate response after their shock continental exit.
The hosts started the match on the front foot and almost found an early breakthrough in the 10th minute. Iqraam Rayners showed impressive skill down the right flank before delivering a dangerous cross into the box, but none of his teammates were able to apply the finishing touch.
Sundowns continued to press, although their momentum was briefly interrupted when Fawaaz Basadien received a yellow card in the 16th minute for a foul. Despite the booking, the Tshwane giants maintained control of possession and continued probing for gaps in the Gallants defence.
Their breakthrough arrived in the 20th minute. Rayners was once again at the heart of the move, providing a perfectly weighted assist for Siyanda Ndlovu, who smashed his effort into the roof of the net to give Sundowns a deserved 1-0 lead. Just two minutes later, midfielder Thabo Cele also entered the referee’s book following a foul.
Marumo Gallants looked to respond and produced moments of promise going forward. However, Sundowns goalkeeper Ricardo Goss remained alert, making a comfortable save in the 29th minute to preserve his side’s advantage. Gallants midfielder Ndabayithethwa Ndlondlo was later shown a yellow card in the 33rd minute as the encounter became increasingly physical.
As the half progressed, Sundowns enjoyed long spells of possession and patiently moved the ball around while searching for a second goal. The hosts controlled much of the play during the closing stages of the first half, but Gallants managed to hold firm and keep the scoreline at 1-0 heading into the break.
Mamelodi Sundowns head coach Miguel Cardoso made a double substitution at halftime, withdrawing both Basadien and Cele, who had already been booked, and introducing Aubrey Modiba and Marcelo Allende. The changes gave Sundowns fresh energy as they looked to tighten their grip on the match.
The second half saw chances at both ends. Arthur Sales went close in the 51st minute when his long-range strike sailed narrowly over the crossbar. At the other end, Ricardo Goss produced one of the saves of the match in the 58th minute, denying Gallants with an excellent stop to protect Sundowns’ slender lead.
Both coaches turned to their benches as the contest entered its final stages. Sundowns introduced Nuno Santos for Arthur Sales in the 64th minute, while Gallants responded with a series of substitutions, including the introductions of Katlego Otladisa, Onke Moletshe and Lebogang Button. Nuno Santos nearly made an instant impact in the 74th minute after combining brilliantly with Rayners, but his effort drifted just wide of the upright. Sundowns later handed opportunities to Tashreeq Matthews and Monnapule Saleng as they sought to see out the result.
Gallants pushed forward in search of a late equaliser, but Sundowns remained disciplined defensively. Otladisa received a yellow card in stoppage time as frustrations grew for the visitors. When the final whistle sounded, Ndlovu’s first-half strike proved enough to separate the sides, with Sundowns returning to winning ways and advancing to the Carling Knockout quarter-finals with a determined 1-0 victory over a resilient Marumo Gallants outfit.
