Tshepang Moremi Brace Fires Orlando Pirates Into Carling Knockout Quarter-Finals

Defending Carling Knockout champions Orlando Pirates secured their place in the quarter-finals with an emphatic 3-0 victory over Milford FC at the Orlando Amstel Arena on Tuesday. A first-half masterclass from the Buccaneers, led by Tshepang Moremi’s brace and a goal from Thapelo Mokobodi, proved too much for the visitors to overcome.

Pirates started brightly and created the first attacking opportunity in the third minute when Bulelani Sigomoshe combined well with Gamphani Lungu down the right. Lungu’s dangerous cross was deflected behind for the match’s first corner as the hosts immediately put Milford under pressure.

The Buccaneers continued to threaten and nearly opened the scoring in the fifth minute. Tshepang Moremi tested the Milford defence with an effort at goal that drifted narrowly wide. Milford’s frustrations began to show moments later when Olwethu Cele received a yellow card in the eighth minute for a foul.

Pirates eventually found the breakthrough in the 15th minute. Moremi turned provider, delivering the assist for Thapelo Mokobodi, who made no mistake in finding the back of the net to hand the home side a deserved 1-0 advantage. Just two minutes later, Lungu came close to doubling the lead, but a crucial block from Olwethu Cele denied him inside the penalty area.

The hosts maintained their attacking momentum throughout the first half despite a booking for Sbangani Zulu in the 21st minute and another for Thalente Mbatha four minutes later. Mbatha almost added his name to the scoresheet in the 23rd minute, but Milford goalkeeper Siphamandla Hleza produced an excellent save to keep his side in the contest.

Pirates eventually doubled their advantage in the 34th minute when Moremi got the reward for his energetic display. The forward found space inside the box and calmly finished to make it 2-0. Milford’s problems deepened shortly afterwards when Yanelisa Nomandela was cautioned for a foul, while Pirates suffered an injury setback as Gamphani Lungu was forced off in the 39th minute and replaced by Mpho Padime.

The Buccaneers delivered another blow just before the halftime whistle. Moremi grabbed his second goal of the evening in the 45th minute, finishing off another attacking move to send Pirates into the break with a commanding 3-0 lead and one foot firmly in the quarter-finals.

Milford coach Xanti Pupuma responded by making four substitutions at halftime, introducing Sicelo Masilela, Thabana Mabena, Mnqobi Mbhele and Vusumuzi Mthabela. The changes brought greater energy to the visitors, but Pirates remained comfortable and disciplined defensively throughout the second half.

The Buccaneers continued to create opportunities after the restart. Deon Hotto sparked a dangerous attack in the 54th minute before Mpho Padime fired wide a minute later. Milford managed a rare effort on target in the 62nd minute through Vusumuzi Mthabela, but goalkeeper Sipho Chaine dealt comfortably with the long-range strike. Pirates coach Abdeslam Ouaddou then freshened up his side in the 64th minute with a quadruple substitution, introducing Boitumelo Radiopane, Mohau Nkota, Cemran Dansin and Mthetheleli Mthiyane.

With the result effectively settled, Pirates continued searching for more goals. Mokobodi missed a promising chance in the 72nd minute before Radiopane was denied by Hleza in the 81st minute. Padime also tested the Milford defence late on, winning a corner after a dangerous run from the left flank. Despite those missed opportunities, Pirates comfortably saw out the remainder of the match to record a convincing 3-0 victory and continue their defence of the Carling Knockout crown with a place in the last eight.
