Durban City FC Set for North African Test After CAF Confederation Cup Draw

Durban City FC have discovered their opponents for the 2026/27 CAF Confederation Cup group stage following the official draw held in Cairo, Egypt, on Wednesday.

The draw brought together 16 of Africa’s top clubs, each hoping to take another step towards continental glory in one of the continent’s most prestigious club competitions.

South Africa’s sole remaining representative in this season’s CAF Confederation Cup, Durban City, have been placed in Group B alongside Moroccan powerhouse AS FAR, Libyan outfit Al Ahly Tripoli, and Tanzanian side Azam FC.

The draw presents a significant challenge for Durban City, who will be making their group-stage debut against teams with considerable experience in African inter-club competitions.

AS FAR are among Morocco’s most successful clubs and have a strong history on the continental stage, while Al Ahly Tripoli remain one of Libya’s leading football institutions. Azam FC have also become regular participants in CAF competitions in recent years.

For Durban City, the group stage will test both their squad depth and ability to perform under pressure, particularly with demanding trips across North and East Africa awaiting the club.

The group-stage fixtures will be played between November 2026 and January 2027, with the top two teams from each group advancing to the quarter-finals scheduled for February 2027.

Despite being viewed as underdogs in the group, Durban City will be aiming to make a strong impression and prove they can compete against some of the continent’s established clubs.

Elsewhere, Group A features Egyptian giants Al Ahly FC, Morocco’s Raja CA, ASKO de Kara of Togo, and Angola’s CD 1º de Agosto in what promises to be another highly competitive section.

Group C consists of CR Belouizdad/AS Douanes/MN/HFC as displayed during the draw, DR Congo’s AS Maniema Union, Singida Black Stars of Tanzania, and Zambia’s Red Arrows FC. Group D includes USM Alger of Algeria, Tunisia’s CS Sfaxien, Mozambique’s Black Bulls, and Mali’s AS Real de Bamako.
