Brandon Petersen Calls for Courage and Commitment Ahead of Soweto Derby
Kaizer Chiefs captain Brandon Petersen believes his side is heading into the Soweto Derby with renewed confidence as they prepare to face Orlando Pirates at FNB Stadium. Speaking at the official Betway Premiership derby press conference in Randburg, the goalkeeper said recent performances have given the team belief ahead of one of the biggest fixtures in South African football.
Chiefs have faced challenges this season, but Petersen feels the squad has shown encouraging signs in recent matches. He pointed to the team’s improved attacking display as a positive step forward and believes it has provided a timely boost ahead of the derby showdown.
The experienced shot-stopper stressed that success in a match of this magnitude requires complete commitment from every player. According to Petersen, the derby demands mental strength, physical readiness, and emotional control from the first whistle to the last.
He explained that players must be prepared to battle for every ball and every moment on the pitch. Petersen noted that determination and aggression are often key factors in deciding the outcome of such fiercely contested encounters.
The Chiefs captain also acknowledged the quality of Orlando Pirates, describing them as a team enjoying strong form. He recognised that Pirates enter the match as defending league champions and one of the leading sides in the country.
Despite that respect, Petersen insisted that derby matches often have a character of their own. He believes current form and league standings frequently become irrelevant when the two Soweto giants go head-to-head, creating an opportunity for Chiefs to prove themselves on the big stage.
Petersen also welcomed the return of defender Ruan to the squad after a lengthy spell on the sidelines. He described the defender as an important figure whose presence brings added quality, experience, and confidence to the team’s defensive unit.
As anticipation continues to grow ahead of the derby, Petersen remains confident that Chiefs are ready for the challenge. The captain believes the squad has prepared well and is determined to produce a performance that matches the occasion against their long-time rivals.
