Mfundo Vilakazi Shrugs Off Pressure Ahead of High-Stakes Soweto Derby

Kaizer Chiefs midfielder Mfundo “Obrigado” Vilakazi has expressed confidence and composure ahead of the eagerly anticipated Soweto Derby against Orlando Pirates at FNB Stadium. Speaking during the official Betway Premiership derby press conference at the SuperSport Studios in Randburg, the young midfielder made it clear that the team remains focused on delivering a positive result.

Vilakazi reflected on Chiefs’ recent victory over Galaxy, highlighting the importance of building momentum and maintaining consistency. He noted that winning games is crucial, but emphasized that the team must continue improving its ability to find the back of the net on a regular basis.

The midfielder acknowledged that expectations are always high when representing a club of Kaizer Chiefs’ stature. However, he insisted that the squad understands the responsibility that comes with wearing the famous gold and black jersey and is prepared to embrace the challenge.

Despite being one of the younger players in the squad, Vilakazi believes the current group has the mentality required to handle the demands of competing at the highest level. He stated that the players are determined to carry the expectations of supporters while remaining focused on their objectives on the pitch.

Vilakazi also addressed the issue of outside noise and criticism, explaining that he avoids distractions by concentrating on his performances and the team’s goals. He stressed that paying attention to social media commentary or negative opinions can take players away from what truly matters.

With excitement continuing to build ahead of the derby, Vilakazi said the players understand the significance of the occasion. While acknowledging the magnitude of the fixture, he maintained that the focus must remain on the task at hand rather than the atmosphere surrounding the match.

The Chiefs midfielder believes maintaining composure will be vital in such a fiercely contested encounter. He explained that staying disciplined and executing the team’s plans will be more important than getting caught up in the emotions that often accompany the famous rivalry.

Vilakazi concluded by expressing confidence in both himself and his teammates as they prepare for one of the biggest matches on the South African football calendar. For the talented midfielder, confidence comes from hard work, preparation, and a collective commitment to achieving the desired result when Chiefs take on Pirates.
