Abdeslam Ouaddou Takes Full Responsibility Despite Famous Soweto Derby Win

Orlando Pirates head coach Abdeslam Ouaddou accepted full responsibility for his side’s difficult start in their Soweto Derby victory over Kaizer Chiefs, admitting that a tactical decision made before kick-off almost backfired.

Despite walking away with all three points, Ouaddou revealed that his plan to surprise Chiefs did not work as intended during the opening stages of the match. The coach said the responsibility for the team’s struggles in the first half rested squarely on his shoulders.

Chiefs enjoyed several promising moments early on and looked capable of taking complete control of the contest. Ouaddou acknowledged that his players found it difficult to settle into their rhythm as the opposition created dangerous opportunities.

The Pirates mentor praised Chiefs for the pressure they applied and admitted they had chances to put the game beyond reach. However, he felt his side remained alive in the contest because their rivals failed to make the most of those opportunities.

At the break, Ouaddou and his technical team moved quickly to make important adjustments. Changes in player positioning and a greater emphasis on keeping possession in midfield helped Pirates regain control and produce a much-improved display after the interval.

The tactical tweaks paid off as Pirates grew stronger and eventually found a way back into the match. Ouaddou credited his players for responding positively to the changes and showing the character required to overturn a challenging situation.

The coach also reserved special praise for Lawrence, who was named man of the match. Ouaddou highlighted the midfielder’s work ethic, intelligence and commitment, describing him as a player whose qualities are vital to the team’s balance and overall performance.

Beyond the result itself, Ouaddou spoke warmly about the atmosphere surrounding the Soweto Derby, applauding the passion shown by supporters from both clubs. While delighted with the victory, he stressed that Pirates must continue improving and become more clinical in front of goal as they turn their attention to upcoming CAF Champions League commitments.
