Century of Caps: Bambanani Mbane’s Historic Milestone with Banyana Banyana

The Mamelodi Sundowns and Banyana Banyana star, Bambanani Mbane, who is expected to win her 100th cap in a friendly against Alegria this month, talks about playing a “man’s sport”, overcoming serious injury, and the upcoming WAFCON.

  1. What challenges have you faced while rising through the ranks in football?

One of the biggest challenges I faced was being judged for playing what was seen as a man’s sport. In my village, there were no other girls playing football, so I was often criticized for playing with boys.

  1. You are a calm and composed player. How do these strengths fit into the culture at Mamelodi Sundowns?

I believe my style of play fits well into the Mamelodi Sundowns’ system because the build-up usually starts from the back. We focus on building from defense, which requires players to be calm and comfortable on the ball.

  1. You suffered a serious injury at the 2023 World Cup. Tell us about the recovery journey?

Honestly, it was draining, but I’m grateful that I had a strong support system. My wife took care of me, and although it was hard, having someone by my side made a big difference. I was also motivated by the desire to come back stronger.

  1. Any positives to take out of the Women’s Africa Cup of Nation’s being postponed to July?

Yes, it gives us more time to prepare and a chance to work on ourselves individually as players. It will also allow us to play more games, especially since most of the players were in pre-season. So, we have more time to assess how ready we are for WAFCON.

  1. What in your football life makes you most proud?

My biggest achievement was being part of the team that won WAFCON 2022. Reaching 100 national team caps will also be incredibly special to me as it’s a milestone not everyone achieves. It reflects my dedication, consistency, and hard work over the years.

  1. Which football boot do you play in, and why?

I play in the PUMA Ultra boots because they are lightweight and comfortable, which allows me to move freely and perform at my best on the pitch.

  1. Why have you been loyal to the sports brand?

The PUMA family has played a huge role in my career because they make sure, I have everything I need as a player. They motivate me to push myself and perform at my best to make the brand proud. I see it as my way of giving back to the brand. PUMA is no longer just a sponsor to me; it’s family. They have consistently shown loyalty and delivered on their commitments, which is why I remain committed to them and value the relationship we have.

  1. Any advice for players looking to attract sponsors?

Be dedicated, consistent, and disciplined, and know what you want. Brands don’t just approach you randomly, it’s because of the way you conduct yourself as a player.

  1. How do you consistently maintain such high standards?

I constantly remind myself that I can always improve, both as a player and as a person. I’m open to learning, and I regularly review my performances to identify areas where I can improve.

  1.  What motivation would you give to aspiring footballers?

Young players should set clear goals and consistently work towards achieving them. Having goals helps serve as a constant reminder and keeps you focused on your journey. The process won’t be easy, but it is always worth it in the end. It’s also important to remain open to learning and to ask questions.
