Abdeslam Ouaddou Demands More as Orlando Pirates March Into Semi-Finals
Orlando Pirates head coach Abdeslam Ouaddou praised his team’s determination after securing a hard-fought victory over Sekhukhune United, but admitted there is still plenty of work to be done despite progressing to the Carling Knockout Cup semi-finals.
Speaking after the match at the Orlando Amstel Arena, Ouaddou acknowledged that Pirates were made to work for the result by a disciplined and well-organised Sekhukhune side. He credited his opponents for their approach while expressing satisfaction with his team’s ability to find a way through.
The Pirates mentor felt his side produced enough chances to deserve the victory, particularly during a strong opening spell. However, he also admitted that the match became more difficult as it progressed and required tactical adjustments to maintain control.
Ouaddou revealed that communication and pressing were areas that needed attention during the second half. In response, changes were made to the team’s structure, helping Pirates regain their balance and protect their advantage until the final whistle.
Despite advancing to the next round, the coach was not entirely pleased with his team’s finishing. He pointed to several missed opportunities and stressed that the scoreline should have reflected Pirates’ dominance in front of goal.
Improving efficiency in the final third remains a key objective for the technical team. Ouaddou believes that creating chances is only part of the job and wants his players to become more clinical when opportunities arise in crucial matches.
The coach also discussed the importance of managing a large squad throughout a demanding season. He explained that competition for places remains healthy and that younger players must continue proving they are ready to contribute whenever called upon.
Looking ahead, Ouaddou emphasised the importance of consistency as Pirates continue their pursuit of success on multiple fronts. With the club safely through to the semi-finals, the focus now shifts to maintaining standards, improving performances and ensuring the Buccaneers remain strong contenders for silverware this season.
