Fernando Da Cruz Laments Missed Chances & Refereeing Calls After Derby Defeat

Kaizer Chiefs head coach Fernando Da Cruz cut a frustrated figure after his side suffered a Soweto Derby defeat to Orlando Pirates at FNB Stadium. While disappointed with the final result, the Amakhosi mentor felt the outcome could have been very different had his team taken advantage of their early opportunities.

Da Cruz praised his players’ performance during the opening stages of the match, insisting Chiefs were the better side for long periods before the break. He argued that his team created enough chances to establish a comfortable lead but failed to convert their dominance into goals.

According to the coach, Chiefs delivered what he described as a masterclass during the first half. However, he stressed that football often punishes teams that do not make the most of their opportunities, and he believes that was the story of the derby.

The Chiefs mentor was also highly critical of certain officiating decisions during the encounter. He questioned the legality of Orlando Pirates’ opening goal and felt there were moments in the match that should have been judged differently by the match officials.

Da Cruz further suggested that the course of the contest could have changed significantly if key decisions had gone in his team’s favour. The coach maintained that certain incidents had a major impact on the momentum and flow of the match.

Beyond the refereeing concerns, Da Cruz highlighted the challenges facing his squad. He pointed to the youthful nature of the group and explained that maintaining a high level of performance throughout the entire match remains a work in progress.

The coach also acknowledged that physical fatigue played a role as the game progressed. With the team having faced a demanding schedule, he felt energy levels dropped late in the contest, allowing their opponents to take greater control during the closing stages.

Despite the setback, Da Cruz remains optimistic about Chiefs’ prospects moving forward. He believes the team will continue to improve as injured players return and the squad gains more experience. Reflecting on the derby, the coach concluded that the biggest lesson was the importance of being ruthless in front of goal, insisting that teams must take their chances when the opportunity to finish off a match presents itself.
